Chloe Hurst, a graphic designer from Carleton Place, Ontario, Canada, has spent thousands of dollars transforming her backyard into a gothic-style outdoor space. She is obsessed with the color black and has dreamed of creating a black nursery in her backyard ever since she was a little girl. Hurst lives with her contractor husband, Jason, and has spent roughly $1,000 each year on making her backyard a goth garden. Growing up, she always wanted to plant black flowers, and now she has black petunias, lilies, tulips, and mondo grass in her outdoor space.
Hurst takes inspiration from “The Addams Family” and “Dark Shadows” and has always enjoyed the darker things in life. She loves dark, moody gardens because they bring her joy. Her parents tried dressing her in bright colors, but she always preferred black. Hurst said she was immersed in goth culture during her teens, and it is not just an aesthetic for her. The interior of her home is filled with bone décor, different shades of black, and moody wallpaper, which her husband has had to get used to over the years.
Over the six years she and her husband have been in their home, Hurst has spent about $6,000 making her outdoor space goth. She likes a “full garden” with dark shrubs, sweet potato vines, perennials, and other dark plants. Her goal is to eventually make her living space into a haunted, Victorian-style home. Hurst has over 218,000 Instagram followers and shares her “goth garden” ways with those interested. She wants her backyard to look mysterious and weird, creating something really special.
Hurst’s black nursery in her backyard is a long journey, with each of her plants being born in local nurseries. She enjoys the process of creating her gothic outdoor space and finds joy in the darker aesthetic. Her husband, Jason, may not share her love for dark colors and decor, but he has adapted to her style over the years. Hurst said she would love to paint every room in her home black if she had the choice, but her husband may not agree with that decision.
With a love for goth culture since her teenage years, Hurst has always been drawn to dark, moody gardens and finds joy in their aesthetics. She takes inspiration from gothic TV shows and movies and has incorporated that into her outdoor space as well as the interior of her home. She expresses her unique personality through her goth garden and hopes to continue transforming her living space into a haunted, Victorian-style home in the future. Hurst’s dedication to her goth garden has caught the attention of many on social media, as she shares her passion with over 218,000 Instagram followers.
