The WNBA has made the decision to move its preseason game in Edmonton between the Los Angeles Sparks and Seattle Storm to May 4th. Originally scheduled for May 5th at Rogers Place in Edmonton, the game has been rescheduled due to the NHL’s Oilers potentially hosting a Game 7 playoff series against the Los Angeles Kings that same day. The game will now tip off at 9:30 p.m. EDT.

This is the second consecutive year that the WNBA has played a preseason game in Canada. Last season, a game between the Chicago Sky and Minnesota Lynx in Toronto drew a sold-out crowd and set records for TV viewership, attendance, and merchandise sales in Canada. This move to hold preseason games in Canada highlights the growing popularity and interest in women’s basketball in the country.

The decision to move the game to accommodate a potential Game 7 for the NHL’s Oilers reflects the WNBA’s flexibility and adaptability in scheduling games. By adjusting the date of the game, the league ensures that both the WNBA game and the potential NHL playoff game can proceed without any conflicts. This demonstrates the willingness of the league to work with other organizations and prioritize the needs of all parties involved.

The rescheduled game between the Los Angeles Sparks and Seattle Storm provides fans in Edmonton with an opportunity to see some of the top women’s basketball players in action. With star players from both teams, including Sue Bird, Breanna Stewart, and Nneka Ogwumike, fans can expect an exciting and competitive matchup between these two talented teams. This game serves as a showcase of the talent and skill present in the WNBA.

The success of last year’s preseason game in Canada likely played a role in the decision to hold another game in the country this year. The positive reception from fans, as evidenced by the sold-out crowd and record-setting viewership, indicates a strong interest in women’s basketball in Canada. By continuing to bring WNBA games to Canada, the league can further cultivate this interest and expand its fan base in the country.

Overall, the decision to move the preseason game between the Los Angeles Sparks and Seattle Storm to accommodate the NHL playoffs reflects the WNBA’s commitment to engaging with fans in Canada and showcasing the talent of its players. By adjusting the schedule and ensuring that both games can proceed smoothly, the league demonstrates its flexibility and willingness to work with other organizations. This game provides an exciting opportunity for fans in Edmonton to witness top-tier women’s basketball and continues to build interest and support for the sport in Canada.
