What Your Employees Aren’t Sharing with You About AI in the Workplace

Forbes’ Future of Work newsletter offers the latest news on disruptive technologies, managing the workforce, and trends in remote work. A recent report from Microsoft examines workers’ attitudes about using AI at work, revealing that many employees feel hesitant to admit using AI on important tasks out of fear of appearing replaceable. Despite this reluctance, more than three-quarters of workers are turning to their own AI tools, such as ChatGPT, rather than company-provided options, leading to a phenomenon Microsoft calls “BYOAI.”

AI’s increasing presence in the workplace is raising concerns about legal risks, as AI is being used to draft job descriptions, marketing copy, and even parts of employee handbooks. Human resources consultants warn that AI-written documents may overlook key clauses or issues, leaving employers vulnerable to legal and financial consequences. Meanwhile, policy and practice issues in the workplace are also under scrutiny, with investigations into the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. revealing a culture of sexual harassment, discrimination, and retaliation against employees who raised concerns.

In the realm of equity and inclusion, a study from New York University suggests that discrimination may lead to accelerated aging, impacting both physical and mental health. The Senate Judiciary Committee has advanced the Protecting Older Americans Act of 2023 to address discrimination against older workers and end forced arbitration. Additionally, the newsletter features an interview with Autodesk’s Chief People Officer, Rebecca Pearce, who discusses the company’s approach to remote work, redesigning office spaces, and promoting intentional gatherings for team collaboration.

On a lighter note, Forbes’ list of the best places to retire in 2024 was recently released, offering unexpected locations for retirement living. And for those interested in some entertainment, Jon Stewart is launching a podcast in June, extending his comedic workweek to three days a week. The newsletter also highlights the rise in jobless claims for the last week of April and offers strategies for HR leaders to build trust in AI and discusses the momentum behind the four-day work week. Overall, the newsletter provides a comprehensive overview of current trends and issues shaping the future of work.
