What We Know About the Deadly Storm Rampaging Through South Texas

A violent storm hit southern parts of Texas on Thursday night, leaving nearly 1 million residents without power. The National Weather Service predicted widespread rainfall in Texas and Louisiana, with 2 to 6 inches expected, and possibly up to a foot in some areas. Meteorologist Eric Burris reported that the storm was producing winds over 100 mph, describing it as “destructive.” Over 900,000 Texas residents were without power, with delays at Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport. Four deaths were reported by the Houston mayor’s office, with the circumstances still unknown.

Governor of Texas Greg Abbott requested a Presidential Disaster Declaration from President Joe Biden for areas of the state affected by harsh weather last month. The severe storms, flooding, and tornadoes have caused extensive damage, with Abbott asking for financial assistance to help communities rebuild and recover. The storm is now moving eastward towards Louisiana and Mississippi, with an increased flood risk as far east as Florida over the weekend. The storm caused destruction in Houston, with buildings downtown having windows blown out and glass littering the streets.

The storm’s impact on Minute Maid Park caused chaos before the baseball game between the Houston Astros and Oakland Athletics. Newsweek is committed to challenging conventional wisdom and finding connections in the search for common ground. Governor Abbott emphasized the need for comprehensive and robust action from all levels of government to assist Texans in rebuilding and recovering from the severe weather. The presidential disaster declaration would provide critical financial assistance for temporary housing, home repairs, and grant funding for infrastructure.

The storm’s destructive force was evident in Houston, with reports of buildings with blown out windows and glass littering the streets. The Houston mayor’s office reported four deaths, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. The storm left over 900,000 Texas residents without power, creating delays at Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport. As the storm moves eastward towards Louisiana, Mississippi, and potentially Florida, the risk of flooding increases, posing a threat to communities in its path.

Meteorologist Eric Burris warned of the storm’s potency, with winds exceeding 100 mph and causing widespread damage in its wake. Governor Abbott’s request for a Presidential Disaster Declaration underscores the urgent need for assistance in the affected areas. The storm’s impact on Minute Maid Park before the baseball game highlighted the chaos wreaked by the severe weather. Newsweek’s focus on challenging conventional wisdom and seeking connections in the search for common ground demonstrates a commitment to understanding and interpreting significant events like this destructive storm in Texas.
