A hangover is a situation characterized by a combination of effects from alcohol metabolism and dehydration. Hangover symptoms include fatigue, weakness, thirst, headache, muscle aches, nausea, stomach pain, vertigo, sensitivity to light and sound, irritability, sweating, and increased blood pressure. Hangover casualties often seek a cure in the form of a diner breakfast or more alcohol, but it is essential to find a sustainable solution for overindulgence as hangovers may worsen over time. There are various ways to ease the ache of a hangover, including hydrating and replenishing electrolytes to help support the process of eliminating toxins from the body.

Hydrating fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as celery, cucumbers, watermelon, and zucchini, can help with hydration due to their high water content. Consuming fruits like watermelon and oranges can also help replenish electrolytes and natural sugars to boost low blood sugar levels. Oranges, in particular, provide immune-supporting vitamin C. Bone broth is viewed as both a prophylactic and a remedy for hangovers due to its nutritional balance and filling qualities. Drinking bone broth before heading out for the evening can help fuel the body with essential nutrients and electrolytes, while sipping on it during a hangover can help restore the body’s functions and support gut health.

Salmon is a balanced and tasty food option for those experiencing a hangover as it contains vitamin B6 and B12, which regulate regular body functions. Salmon is also high in omega-3 fats, which may help reduce inflammation caused by drinking alcohol. Simple, palatable, and easy-to-digest foods like rice, toast, and bananas are recommended for individuals experiencing stomach upset and a persistent need to vomit during a hangover. Bananas are a good choice as they contain a healthy dose of potassium, which can help replenish electrolytes. It is important to hydrate and replenish electrolytes to help ease the symptoms of a hangover and support the body’s natural detoxification process.

In addition to chugging water, adding powdered electrolytes to your water bottle or sipping on Pedialyte can help rehydrate the body and replenish electrolytes like potassium and sodium. These drinks also help boost blood sugar levels, which are often low during a hangover. Registered dietitian Bianca Tamburello recommends consuming hydrating fruits and veggies to help with dehydration and to supply the body with essential vitamins and minerals. Fruits like watermelon and oranges can provide electrolytes and natural sugars, while electrolyte-rich drinks can help bring the body back to life by replenishing vital nutrients. It is crucial to prioritize hydration and balancing electrolytes to ease the symptoms of a hangover and support the body’s recovery process.
