What is North Korea gaining by deploying its soldiers in Russia’s conflict?

The potential involvement of around 10,000 North Korean troops in Russia’s war in Ukraine has raised concerns about the implications for the international community. While Russia stands to gain military support in its efforts to expel Ukrainian forces from its territory, the motivations behind Kim Jong Un’s decision to send troops remain unclear. The strategic implications of North Korea joining Moscow’s war have alarmed the United States and its allies, particularly as tensions between North Korea and South Korea continue to escalate.

The move signifies a deepening partnership between North Korea and Russia, with Moscow welcoming North Korean troops as a means to strengthen its forces. North Korean troops are anticipated to aid in the fight against Ukrainian invaders in Russia’s Kursk region, after Ukrainian forces successfully seized territory in the area. The presence of North Korean troops has drawn widespread international condemnation, with NATO confirming their deployment to the Kursk region, where they are expected to provide support to Russian forces.

The visit of South Korea’s foreign and defense ministers to Washington highlights the growing concern over North Korea’s involvement in the conflict. Russian President Vladimir Putin has emphasized that the escalation in Ukraine is due to the actions of the United States and NATO, deflecting blame for the presence of North Korean troops in Russia. Speculation surrounds the benefits that North Korea may be receiving from Russia, ranging from valuable resources to technological knowledge, such as access to the Vostochny spaceport.

The dispatch of troops signifies a significant commitment from North Korea, driven by mutual desperation on both sides. Moscow seeks support for its war efforts, while North Korea aims to secure protection from the UN Security Council as it pursues its nuclear ambitions. The strategic partnership between Russia and North Korea has been further solidified as North Korea prepares to repeat its failed attempt to launch a spy satellite with Russian assistance. This relationship allows North Korea to test missiles and provoke South Korea without facing sanctions due to Russia’s veto power at the UN Security Council.

For Kim’s regime, the involvement of North Korean troops in Ukraine presents an opportunity for its military to gain valuable combat experience in modern warfare. The conflict serves as a practical laboratory for troops to study tactics and strategies on the battlefield, as North Korea’s military has not engaged in active warfare for some time. South Korea’s concerns about North Korean involvement in the conflict extend beyond military support, with a focus on strategic issues such as the nuclear program. The potential benefits that North Korea may gain from combat experience could impact regional security dynamics.
