What experts have to say about beauty influencers using garlic on their faces

TikTok users have been discussing the beauty benefits of using raw garlic to clear up skin imperfections such as acne. Many videos on the app show people rubbing a clove of raw garlic directly on their pimples, claiming that it helps to eliminate blemishes quickly. However, experts warn against this practice, stating that applying garlic directly to the skin can cause irritation or even chemical burns, leading to post-inflammatory marks. Dermatologists like Dr. Ketaki Bhate and Dr. Shereene Idriss advise against using garlic as a skincare treatment, emphasizing the importance of treating the root cause of acne to avoid long-term scarring.

While topically applying raw garlic to the skin may not be a good idea, consuming garlic can offer some health benefits. Nutritionist Emily English highlights that garlic is a rich source of vitamins C and B6, manganese, selenium, and sulfur compounds such as allicin, which have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. English suggests incorporating garlic into the diet along with other acne-friendly foods to promote healthy skin, focusing on omega-3s, probiotics, and zinc for optimal results in managing acne.

Experts recommend consulting with a dermatologist before trying any new skincare remedies to ensure the products are safe and effective for individual skin types. Dr. Bhate advises against using too many products at once, as it can lead to skin irritation. For acne cases, Dr. Idriss recommends considering topical treatments such as exfoliating acids like salicylic acid to clear out excess sebum in the pores. Additionally, benzoyl peroxide can help reduce bacterial load on the skin, while retinol and retinal can regulate cell turnover. For emergency situations, hydrocolloid patches can be used to minimize the appearance of large pimples quickly.

Overall, while the TikTok trend of using raw garlic for acne may seem appealing, experts warn against this unconventional practice and advise seeking professional guidance for proper acne management. Consuming garlic as part of a balanced diet can offer health benefits, but it is not a substitute for prescribed acne medications. It is important to address the root cause of acne and consider using proven skincare products recommended by dermatologists. By following a tailored skincare routine and incorporating acne-friendly foods into the diet, individuals can improve their skin health and prevent long-term scarring from acne breakouts. Remember to prioritize skin health and seek expert advice before trying any new treatments.
