What Changes Apple Watch X Needs: My Wishlist for Apple’s Next Smartwatch

In 2023, Apple released the Apple Watch Series 9, which included a new Double Tap gesture and changes to the interface in WatchOS 10. Reports suggest that Apple may introduce the Apple Watch X to commemorate the device’s 10th anniversary, featuring a thinner design, a new band attachment mechanism, a microLED screen, and blood pressure monitoring. The use of a new type of OLED display panel could also enhance the watch’s power efficiency. Apple faces competition from Google’s Fitbit and Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Ring, so improvements to the Apple Watch’s AI integration and health tracking capabilities could be on the horizon.

One area of focus for Apple could be enhancing the Apple Watch’s AI capabilities to provide more intuitive health insights. Siri on the Series 9 can now process certain requests locally, allowing for quicker responses to health-related queries. Implementing generative AI could further improve the device’s ability to provide personalized health recommendations based on data gathered from the watch. Apple is reportedly working on an AI coaching program and a more advanced version of Siri, which could enhance the Apple Watch’s health-tracking capabilities.

Apple may also expand the functionality of the Double Tap gesture by introducing more customization options. While Double Tap currently allows users to perform various actions like scrolling through widgets or snoozing alarms, adding additional customization options could make the gesture more versatile and convenient. Updates to Double Tap could potentially be included in future software updates rather than waiting for a new model of the Apple Watch. Design enhancements, such as a slimmer case, microLED screens, and a new band attachment method, could be in the works for the rumored Apple Watch X, offering a more vivid display and improved usability.

The introduction of the Action button on the Apple Watch Ultra in 2022 highlighted the need for a similar feature on other Apple Watch models. The presence of the Action button on premium devices like the Apple Watch Ultra and the iPhone 15 Pro suggests that it could become a standard feature across Apple’s product lineup. The potential inclusion of the Action button on the Apple Watch X and other models could further enhance user experience, especially as widgets play a more prominent role in navigation with WatchOS 10. Apple’s focus on merging intelligence with health tracking and incorporating user-friendly features like the Action button could propel the Apple Watch to new heights in 2024 and beyond.
