Week 1 of UFL 2024: A Statistical Breakdown

Week 1 of the UFL saw exciting games and standout performances from various teams and players. The Birmingham Stallions, Michigan Panthers, San Antonio Brahmas, and Memphis Showboats emerged victorious, while the Arlington Renegades, St. Louis Battlehawks, DC Defenders, and Houston Roughnecks fell short. Panthers kicker Jake Bates made headlines with a record-breaking, game-winning 64-yard field goal, showcasing his talent and resilience. Bates had never attempted a field goal since high school but proved his worth in the clutch moment against the Battlehawks.

Wes Hills, the USFL’s leading rusher last season, continued his impressive performance with 85 yards on just 11 carries for the Michigan Panthers in Week 1. Kai Nacua, brother of NFL star Puka Nacua, led the league in tackles with 11, including a sack, contributing to the Panthers’ thrilling victory. Former USFL teams currently hold a 2-0 advantage over former XFL teams, with wins by the Stallions and Panthers. Notably, the Birmingham Stallions have a remarkable record of 22 wins in their last 25 games in spring football, showcasing their dominance in the league over the past few seasons.

The San Antonio Brahmas pulled off an upset win against the DC Defenders, with punter Brad Wing orchestrating a trick play that resulted in a 40-yard touchdown pass to center Alex Mollette. This creative play caught the Defenders off guard and added an exciting element to the game. Isaiah Winstead of the Arlington Renegades showcased his explosiveness with a 51-yard touchdown, the longest play of Week 1. The Stallions also displayed a strong rushing attack, amassing 183 yards on the ground in their opening win, with quarterbacks Matt Corral and Adrian Martinez contributing 77 rushing yards.

Overall, Week 1 of the UFL featured thrilling moments and standout performances from various teams and players. Jake Bates’ game-winning field goal and Brad Wing’s trick play touchdown added excitement and drama to the games. Wes Hills and Kai Nacua showcased their skills and contributed to their teams’ victories. Former USFL teams hold an early edge over former XFL teams, while the Birmingham Stallions continue their dominance in spring football with an impressive record.
