The news coming from the Italian embassy in Tel Aviv indicates that the attacks and attempted infiltrations are aimed at weakening Hezbollah’s resistance and blocking the initiatives of terrorist groups linked to Iran. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated in an interview that they are currently monitoring the situation closely. Tajani emphasized the complexity of the situation, urging Italian citizens to leave Lebanon using commercial flights departing from Beirut. He also reassured that Italian military personnel at the border are safe and that the rules of engagement for the UNIFIL mission would not change, as it is a peacekeeping operation.

Tajani further emphasized that the Italian military’s role is not combative and that they are focused on peacekeeping efforts. He mentioned that there might be a future strengthening of the UNIFIL mission with a potential political role, but this would only happen after de-escalation and the cessation of fighting. The primary goal at the moment is to ensure the safety of Italian citizens and military personnel in the region. Tajani also reported only incursions by troops into Lebanese territory with the aim of destroying Hezbollah outposts.

Italy has been actively involved in humanitarian efforts in the region, as demonstrated by the additional 17 million euros allocated to address the needs of displaced populations. Tajani highlighted Italy’s commitment to easing the suffering of civilians and assisting Palestinian and Lebanese populations affected by the conflict. In response to the crisis, the Vice President of the Council decided to coordinate aid efforts for Lebanon at the Foreign Ministry, involving the Italian civil society to support relief initiatives. The EU Foreign Ministers also held a special meeting to discuss the situation in the Middle East, with Italy playing a leading role in humanitarian assistance initiatives.

The ongoing conflict in the region has led to increased tensions and violence, with terrorist groups linked to Iran making strategic moves to weaken Hezbollah’s position. Italy has been closely monitoring the situation, ensuring the safety of its citizens and military personnel in Lebanon. Tajani reiterated the importance of leaving the country via commercial flights from Beirut to guarantee their security. The focus is on maintaining the rules of engagement for the UNIFIL mission and potentially strengthening its role in the future, once peace has been restored in the region.

The European Union has also been actively involved in addressing the humanitarian crisis in the Middle East, with Italy spearheading efforts to support displaced populations and provide assistance to those affected by the conflict. Tajani’s decision to coordinate aid efforts at the Foreign Ministry reflects Italy’s commitment to alleviating the suffering of civilians in the region. As the situation continues to evolve, Italy remains vigilant and prepared to provide further support as needed. The goal is to promote stability and peace in the region while ensuring the safety and well-being of all those involved in the conflict.
