Washington does not endorse the use of U.S.-made weapons in strikes against Russia, says Ambassador

The U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget Brink, emphasized that while Washington supports helping Ukraine defend itself, it does not condone the use of U.S.-made weapons for strikes on Russian territory. President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Ukraine will not use foreign-supplied weapons to target areas outside its borders. However, domestically produced arms could potentially strike deep into Russia. Despite some allies allowing strikes inside Russia, the U.S. has maintained its position against such actions since the beginning of the conflict.

The U.S. has resumed sending military aid to Ukraine, with a $1 billion package of weapons and equipment from U.S. stockpiles among the first to arrive. This aid is intended to support the efforts of Ukrainian soldiers on the front lines to reclaim territories lost to Russian forces. While some allies, such as the United Kingdom, have supported Ukraine’s right to use weapons provided by them to strike inside Russia, recent targeting of Russian oil refineries by Ukraine has led to criticism from U.S. officials.

The Ukrainian government has been pressing its Western allies for longer-range weapons to aid in the defense against Russian aggression. Despite hesitations from partners about supplying arms that could potentially be used to strike within Russian territory, Ukraine’s stance remains focused on defending its borders rather than engaging in offensive actions outside its borders. The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has raised concerns about global energy markets due to Ukraine’s targeting of Russian oil refineries, prompting responses from Washington and other international allies.

The U.S. ambassador’s statement on the use of U.S.-made weapons in Ukraine reflects a longstanding position against strikes on Russian territory. This position has not changed throughout the course of the conflict and underscores the importance of international support for Ukraine’s defense efforts. While some allies have provided weapons to Ukraine without restrictions on strikes inside Russia, Washington’s stance remains consistent in its opposition to such actions. The recent resumption of military aid from the U.S. underscores its commitment to assisting Ukraine in defending itself against Russian aggression.

Overall, the situation between Ukraine and Russia highlights the complexities of international support and arms supply during times of conflict. The differing positions of allies regarding the use of weapons in Ukraine demonstrate the challenges of navigating geopolitical tensions and international obligations. As the conflict continues, the role of the U.S. and other allies in supporting Ukraine’s defense efforts will remain crucial in determining the outcome of the conflict and its impact on regional stability. The resumption of military aid to Ukraine signifies a renewed commitment to helping the country safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
