Warning Signs Your Washing Machine Needs Cleaning and How to Fix Them

Cleaning your washing machine is important to ensure that your clothes come out smelling fresh and clean. Good Housekeeping recommends cleaning your washer every three to six months to prevent a buildup of grime, mould, mildew, or old soap that can result in a rotten egg smell. Thankfully, newer machines have self-clean functions that make the process easier, but for older models, cleaningfluencer Ann Russell suggests using a mug of bleach in a hot cycle and leaving the door open after use. Hotpoint experts recommend regular cleaning of different parts of the machine, such as the rubber door seal, detergent drawer, filter, and descaling every month for optimal performance.

For a deep clean, Hotpoint advises flushing out the machine by emptying the drum, adding a cleaning agent to the detergent drawer, and running a cotton cycle at 70°C or above. You should then dry the drum and leave the door open to air out. It is also suggested to use the auto-clean function once a month if your machine has it. While washing in low temperatures is more eco-friendly, deep cleaning at higher temperatures helps remove residue and stains. Keeping your washing machine clean not only improves its performance but also ensures your clothes come out smelling fresh every time.

If you have a newer machine that includes a self-clean function, taking advantage of this feature can make cleaning your washing machine much easier. This function is designed to clean the drum, removing any build-up of grime, mould, or mildew that can cause unpleasant smells. By following the manufacturer’s instructions for running the self-clean cycle, you can keep your washing machine in top condition without the need for extra cleaning steps. Regular maintenance of your machine ensures that it continues to work efficiently and effectively for years to come.

In addition to using the self-clean function or following traditional cleaning methods, such as using bleach or cleaning agents, there are simple ways to maintain your washing machine’s cleanliness. Regularly wiping down the rubber door seal, cleaning the detergent drawer, and descaling the machine every month can prevent build-up and ensure optimal performance. Leaving the door open after use is also recommended to allow the machine to air out and prevent dampness. By incorporating these cleaning practices into your routine, you can avoid unpleasant odours and keep your washing machine running smoothly.

Overall, cleaning your washing machine regularly is essential to prevent unpleasant odours and maintain the machine’s performance. By following manufacturer recommendations, using self-clean functions, and incorporating simple cleaning practices, you can ensure that your clothes come out smelling fresh and clean every time. Keeping your washing machine clean not only benefits your laundry but also extends the life of your appliance and reduces the risk of malfunctions or repairs. With a little effort and regular maintenance, you can enjoy perfectly clean clothes without the worry of a smelly washing machine.
