Virginia teacher caught with drugs in 2nd-grade classroom, husband apprehended in parking lot

A second-grade teacher at Spotswood Elementary School in Fredericksburg, Virginia was arrested for possession of drugs after she was found to be high in her classroom by the school resource officer. Candyce Leigh Carter, 35, was charged with possession of schedule I/II narcotics, child endangerment, and child neglect or abuse. During the incident, her husband Kristopher Donald Carter, also suspected to be under the influence of narcotics, was found in a vehicle in the school parking lot with a 2-year-old child. He was charged with felony child endangerment and felony child neglect or abuse, and both Carters were taken to Rappahannock Regional Jail.

The Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office stated that no students reported injuries or exposure to the drugs, but they were checked by medical personnel as a precaution. The classroom where the incident occurred was professionally cleaned. School officials and social services assisted with the arrest. Spotsylvania County School Board member Lisa Phelps expressed gratitude towards law enforcement for their efforts and reassured that the safety of students is a top priority. She highlighted concerns about drug presence in schools and the dangers of substances like fentanyl, emphasizing the importance of prevention and addressing the issue of drug abuse among both adults and children.
