Lockland, a small village near Cincinnati, Ohio, has been struggling with an influx of Mauritanian illegal immigrants, with officials warning of economic shortfalls. The village administrator, Dough Wehmeyer, reported that over 15,000 residents from Mauritania came to the U.S. in 2021, a significant increase from the 543 who arrived in 2022. Additionally, he highlighted the financial strain the influx of illegal immigrants has put on the village, as many claiming asylum cannot work immediately and may not qualify for work permits for months. This has led to a loss of revenue for the village, as those residing in the apartments are not paying taxes, displacing taxpaying residents.
Lockland has requested assistance from congressional offices, state representatives, and the governor’s office to help recoup the financial losses and address the challenges posed by the influx of illegal immigrants. Wehmeyer expressed concern about the impact on the quality of life in the village, noting that the situation has significantly affected the community. Similar struggles have been seen in other towns and cities across the country facing a significant increase in migrants, such as Springfield, Ohio, and Charleroi, Pennsylvania, with cities like Chicago and New York also experiencing strains from influxes of migrants.
