Video: Florida man caught stealing and vandalizing American flag at disabled veterans center nonprofit

A man was caught on surveillance cameras cutting down and stealing an American flag at a Disabled American Veterans (DAV) chapter in Titusville, Florida. The man, identified as Jonathan Wayne Smyth, was seen surveying the flag pole before proceeding to damage it. He was seen using a knife to cut down the strings holding the flag before crumpling it up. Along with vandalizing the flag, Smyth also damaged an outdoor grill and seating areas that veterans often used. Commander John Dunn expressed his heartbreak over the incident, but was grateful for the community’s support in bringing the vandal to justice.

The surveillance video of the vandalism was shared on social media, leading to a quick response from the community. Dunn was initially angry when he saw the flag hit the ground, but was touched by the outpouring of support and assistance from locals in identifying Smyth. People in the community rallied around the DAV chapter, with individuals donating a brand new Pit Boss pellet grill to replace the one that was destroyed, as well as two more couples offering to donate grills to the chapter. The Titusville Police Department confirmed they captured the vandal, Jonathan Wayne Smyth, on Friday afternoon. He was charged with Burglary, Criminal Mischief, and Petit Theft. Smyth, a 42-year-old resident of Mims, Florida, was located and taken into custody without incident. He was booked into the Brevard County Jail and is currently being held without bond. The swift apprehension of Smyth was made possible by the quick response from the community and the assistance of law enforcement, as well as the surveillance footage that helped identify the suspect.

The incident at the DAV chapter in Titusville sparked outrage and disappointment among veterans and the community.
