US expresses sorrow over loss of life in Israeli strike, no policy changes despite civilian deaths

The White House condemned the loss of civilian lives in Rafah due to an Israeli airstrike but stated that there will be no immediate changes in policy towards Israel. The U.S. believes that Israel will not launch a full-scale ground invasion in Rafah, thereby not crossing President Biden’s “red line” for arms transfers. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu acknowledged a “tragic mishap” in carrying out the airstrike, leading to global criticism over civilian deaths.

President Macron and the Foreign Ministry of Germany strongly condemned the Israeli airstrike in Rafah, calling for an end to such operations and better protection for civilians. Qatar also expressed concern that the strike could impede peace talks. The incident occurred after the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to halt its military offensive in Rafah, where thousands of Gazans sought shelter. The U.S. reiterated its condemnation of the loss of innocent lives and emphasized the importance of protecting civilians.

The U.S. remains committed to supporting Israel but urged caution in avoiding further isolation on the world stage. The State Department is monitoring the Israeli investigation into the strike, which targeted Hamas operatives but resulted in civilian casualties. Despite reports of Israeli tanks entering Gaza and a new strike outside Rafah, the U.S. has not announced any policy changes as a result. Security assistance to Israel continues to flow, with the U.S. acknowledging the challenges of conducting military operations in densely populated areas.

The Pentagon spokesperson stated that the U.S. was not aware of the exact munitions used in the deadly strike and referred questions to Israel. Israel claimed to have used precision munitions and attributed civilian deaths to a secondary explosion. The U.S. has not paused shipments to Israel following the strike. The incident highlights the difficulties of military operations in populated areas, prompting calls for thorough investigations and accountability. President Biden and his administration have consistently raised concerns with Israel about protecting civilians during operations, emphasizing the need for caution.
