US Army soldier detained in Russia continues to be held in pretrial detention facility, say Pentagon officials

A U.S. Army soldier, Staff Sgt. Gordon Black, was arrested in Vladivostok, Russia, for criminal misconduct and is currently in a pretrial detention facility awaiting his next hearing. The soldier enlisted in 2008 and was assigned to the Eighth Army U.S. Forces Korea at Camp Humphreys. Black left Korea for Russia instead of returning to the U.S., which violated official travel restrictions to Russia set by the Department of Defense and State Department guidelines. His mother believes he was set up by his Russian girlfriend, whom he met while stationed in South Korea, and blames her for his current situation. Black faces charges of assault and theft in Russia, and his deployment history includes Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Army has opened an administrative investigation into Black’s unauthorized travel to Russia and his actions. Officials are looking into the consequences of his actions, as official leave to Russia is strictly prohibited for military personnel. Black’s mother expressed concerns about his relationship with his Russian girlfriend, suspecting that she may have orchestrated his arrest. The charges against Black involve beating a woman and stealing money from her. Despite Black’s military background, there is no evidence to suggest that he intended to stay in Russia after his scheduled leave period ended. The State Department advises against travel to Russia and recommends that U.S. citizens currently there should leave the country.

In addition to Gordon Black, several other Americans are currently detained in Russia for various reasons. William Nycum, an English instructor on a tourist visa, was recently found in a children’s library in Moscow after breaking in. He was sentenced to 10 days in jail. Paul Whelan, a corporate security executive, and Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter, are held on espionage charges, with the U.S. government working to secure their release. Travis Leake, a musician, and Marc Fogel, a teacher, are also detained in Russia on drug-related charges. There are ongoing efforts to negotiate the release of these individuals, including dual nationals Alsu Kurmasheva and Ksenia Khavana.

The situation involving Staff Sgt. Gordon Black highlights the complex and sometimes dangerous circumstances that Americans can face while overseas. The Department of Defense, State Department, and other agencies work to ensure the safety and well-being of U.S. citizens abroad, while also addressing legal and diplomatic challenges that may arise. The case underscores the importance of following official travel guidelines and being cautious in foreign environments. Efforts are ongoing to secure the release of Black and other Americans currently detained in Russia, with negotiations and diplomatic measures being utilized to address their situations. The involvement of American citizens in legal issues abroad underscores the need for vigilance and awareness when traveling internationally.
