The University of South Carolina students were involved in a bus accident in Mississippi that left eleven people injured. The bus, carrying members of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and their guests, was traveling to New Orleans for an event when a tire blew and the bus hit a concrete barrier. The driver, Tina Wilson, and a student were critically injured and taken to hospitals by helicopter, while nine other students were taken by ambulance. Despite the severity of the crash, Bay St. Louis Police Chief Toby Schwartz praised Wilson for her heroic efforts in maintaining control of the bus and preventing further casualties.

The windshield of the bus blew out upon impact, causing Wilson to be ejected from the vehicle. A student named Paul Clune then stepped up to grab the steering wheel and help keep the bus under control until it skidded to a stop. If the bus had flipped during the accident, Schwartz believes there could have been even more casualties, highlighting the bravery and quick thinking of both Wilson and Clune. The uninjured students were later taken to New Orleans after being transported via school bus to a safe location. University of South Carolina officials have made travel arrangements for students who wish to return to Columbia and are providing mental health and academic support for those affected by the accident.

The investigation into the crash is currently ongoing, with troopers looking into the bus owned by Dixon Motor Xpress of Chester, South Carolina. The owner, Todd Dixon, described the crash as a “freak thing” and stated that his company has had no other accidents since its creation in 2019. Dixon emphasized the company’s commitment to safety, highlighting its satisfactory safety rating and the lack of previous accidents in the past two years. He praised Wilson for her years of experience and safe driving instincts, stating that the company does not cut corners in ensuring the safety of its passengers.

The University of South Carolina spokesperson, Collyn Taylor, confirmed that the university is providing support for students affected by the accident and is working to determine how many individuals are still in the hospital. Taylor expressed gratitude for the actions of Wilson and Clune in preventing further harm to the students on the bus. The interstate was blocked for several hours following the crash, causing significant delays for other motorists in the area. The university is focused on ensuring the well-being of its students and has taken proactive steps to address the aftermath of the accident, including offering mental health resources and academic assistance to those in need.

The swift response and heroic actions of both the bus driver and a student during the accident in Mississippi have been praised by law enforcement officials and university representatives. Despite the injuries sustained by eleven individuals, the quick thinking and bravery displayed by Wilson and Clune helped prevent the situation from escalating further. As the investigation into the crash continues, the focus remains on ensuring the well-being of the students involved and providing the necessary support for those affected by the traumatic event. The University of South Carolina and the bus company are working together to address the aftermath of the accident and ensure that similar incidents are prevented in the future.
