Unexpected Risk: How I Lost 42 Pounds on Ozempic

Johann Hari, a journalist, lost 42 pounds while taking the prescription weight loss medication Ozempic. He initially experienced positive physical changes, such as weight loss and the alleviation of back pain. However, Hari realized that emotionally, he did not feel better. He discovered that his inability to comfort eat was negatively impacting his mental health, as he used food as a coping mechanism. Hari discusses his experience with Ozempic in his book, “Magic Pill: The Extraordinary Benefits and Disturbing Risks of the New Weight-Loss Drugs.”

Hari decided to start taking Ozempic when he reached 32% body fat, concerned about his family history of heart disease. He was pleased with the results of Ozempic and its sister drug Wegovy, taking semaglutide, the active ingredient in these medications, which mimics the hormone GLP-1 to make users feel fuller for longer. Despite the physical benefits, Hari was troubled by the psychological impacts of the drug, particularly in relation to his reduced appetite and inability to use food to comfort himself.

Hari compares his experience with Ozempic to the story of Aladdin, noting that getting what you wish for may not always be as expected. He also views himself as part of two experiments – one that contributed to rising obesity rates through processed foods, and another that is attempting to reverse those effects using drugs like Ozempic. He expressed concerns about the potential long-term effects of these medications, citing his increased heart rate and anxiety as worrisome side effects.

Although Hari is apprehensive about the unknown effects of long-term usage of Ozempic and similar drugs, he plans to continue taking them. He acknowledges the risks and side effects associated with anti-obesity medications, such as erectile dysfunction, personality changes, gastrointestinal issues, and changes in behavior. Despite these concerns, Hari believes that the benefits of these drugs outweigh the potential risks, leading him to continue on his weight loss journey with the assistance of Ozempic.

Overall, Hari’s experience with Ozempic highlights the complex relationship between physical and mental health during weight loss. While the drug provided notable physical benefits like weight loss and reduced appetite, it also had unexpected psychological consequences related to emotional comfort and coping mechanisms. As more individuals turn to medications like Ozempic for weight loss, it is crucial to consider both the short-term benefits and potential long-term risks associated with using these drugs to achieve weight loss goals.
