The Rabbit R1 is an AI-powered virtual assistant that aims to do certain tasks better than your smartphone. Priced at $200, it comes in a cardboard box that resembles a rabbit’s face when opened, with the device itself and a protective case inside. The case, designed to look like a cassette tape holder, also doubles as a kickstand. Despite its retro-inspired design, the box does not include a charging cable, as the Rabbit R1 is powered by a lithium ion battery and can be charged using any USB-C cable and power adapter.

The Rabbit R1 is about half the size of a smartphone and runs on an operating system fueled by a “large action model,” which allows the software to learn how to use apps and services like humans. The company behind the device claims that users should not have to manually operate apps, as the AI assistant is trained to get things done efficiently. The R1’s release follows the debut of another AI-powered device, the Humane AI Pin, which aims to reduce reliance on smartphones but received mixed reviews. The Rabbit R1 is part of a new wave of AI gadgets that have emerged in response to the success of chatbots like ChatGPT, with the goal of supplementing or potentially replacing traditional smartphones.

The Rabbit R1’s launch was celebrated with a retro-inspired design, with the device itself available in an orange color that adds to its nostalgic feel. The packaging and design elements of the Rabbit R1, including vintage gadgets and toys showcased at its launch party, contribute to its unique aesthetic. While new AI devices like the Rabbit R1 are gaining popularity, some reviewers remain skeptical of their capabilities and usefulness in comparison to smartphones. The company behind the Rabbit R1 promises a seamless user experience that eliminates the need for manual app operation, but real-world testing will determine whether the device lives up to its claims.

The Rabbit R1 is one of several AI gadgets introduced this year, reflecting a growing interest in AI-powered technology that can streamline tasks and reduce the dependency on smartphones. The device’s compact size and innovative operating system make it a potential competitor in the AI assistant market, offering users a novel way to interact with technology. As the Rabbit R1 continues to undergo user testing and evaluation, its true capabilities and limitations will become clearer, providing insights into the future of AI gadgets and their role in everyday life. Its retro-inspired design and unique features set it apart from traditional smartphones, catering to a niche audience seeking alternative solutions for everyday tasks.
