UMG-TikTok Deal Unmutes Your Videos, Bringing Back Music From Top Artists

Universal Music Group and TikTok have resolved their three-month dispute with a new licensing agreement that allows UMG artists’ music to be used on the platform again. This includes artists like SZA, Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar, and Ariana Grande. Previously muted TikToks featuring UMG music will now be unmuted. UMG Chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge highlighted the importance of music, artistry, and the creative community in this new chapter of the relationship. Popular artists like Billie Eilish, The Weeknd, Drake, and The Beatles were impacted by the dispute, but their music has now been restored.

The disagreement between TikTok and UMG started in February, with UMG claiming that TikTok didn’t fairly compensate artists for their music or adequately protect them from AI and ensure platform safety. Taylor Swift’s return to TikTok with a new album hinted at improved relations between the label and the platform. The new agreement aims to support UMG artists and songwriters in unleashing their creative and commercial potential. TikTok has become a vital promotional tool for musicians and a space for creative expression and community building, allowing users worldwide to create content with their favorite artists’ music.

The partnership between TikTok and UMG also involves collaborations on artist campaigns and new ways for artists to earn money on the platform. Measures to prevent AI-generated music and enhance artist and songwriter attribution have been included in the deal. Despite the positive outcome, TikTok faces ongoing challenges, as a bill signed by President Joe Biden could potentially lead to the platform being banned in the US due to national security concerns related to its China-linked parent company, ByteDance. While US users currently have access to TikTok and UMG’s music library, the broader issue of TikTok’s future remains uncertain.

By leveraging the popularity and influence of TikTok’s 1 billion-plus users, UMG artists and songwriters have the opportunity to reach new audiences and gain exposure through the platform. The agreement with TikTok signifies a significant step towards supporting creative talent and fostering a positive environment for music discovery. As the music industry continues to evolve in the digital age, partnerships between record labels and social media platforms like TikTok play a crucial role in connecting artists with fans and promoting musical diversity. The collaboration between UMG and TikTok reflects a commitment to mutual success and innovation in the ever-changing landscape of music consumption and online content creation.
