France has announced plans to deliver 78 Caesar howitzers to Ukraine in addition to boosting its supply of shells to help Kyiv in its fight against Russia’s invasion. Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu stated that France, Ukraine, and Denmark have agreed to finance the self-propelled 155mm howitzers, allowing for a quick delivery. France aims to provide 80,000 shells for 155mm guns to Ukraine this year, a significant increase from the 30,000 shells delivered since the start of the war on February 24, 2022.
As part of the effort to support Ukraine, the Czech Republic is working to obtain 800,000 artillery shells for the country, with plans for the first delivery by June. At least 18 countries have joined this initiative to help meet Ukraine’s urgent need for military resources. Earlier this month, Germany, France, and Poland pledged to procure more weapons for Kyiv and ramp up military equipment production to aid Ukraine as it faces a shortage of resources.
Lecornu emphasized the importance for European countries to reduce their reliance on the U.S. for security and defense. He stated that a shift towards European countries taking more responsibility for their own security is crucial, especially in light of potential changes in U.S. foreign policy. Concerns have been raised in Europe about the possible weakening of the NATO alliance with the return of Donald Trump to the White House, and even if U.S. President Joe Biden remains in office, there are worries about the U.S. pivot to Asia leaving Europe to fend for its own security.
Amidst these geopolitical concerns, Lecornu highlighted the need for European countries to prioritize their security agenda and ensure that they have the necessary resources to defend themselves. He stressed the importance of European nations working together to address security challenges and not solely relying on external powers like the United States. With the European Parliament election approaching in June, the issue of European security and defense is expected to be a key campaign topic.
The efforts by France, the Czech Republic, and other European countries to support Ukraine in its conflict with Russia reflect a broader shift towards European nations taking a more active role in their own security.
