Hackers targeted Ukraine’s largest mobile-only bank, Monobank, with a powerful denial of service (DDoS) attack on May 2, according to company’s co-founder and CEO Oleh Horokhovskyi. DDoS attacks overwhelm a website with traffic, causing disruptions to service. Horokhovskyi reported another DDoS attack later in the day, with the bank receiving 580 million service requests simultaneously. While he did not identify the attackers, previous threats have been linked to Russian hackers, who have launched numerous cyberattacks against Ukrainian organizations since the start of their invasion.

The Ukraine Business Roundup newsletter from April 30, 2024, highlights the end of protests by Polish farmers at the Hrebenne-Rava-Ruska border crossing. The protests had caused disruptions to trade and travel between Ukraine and Poland, but were finally resolved on April 29. The newsletter provides insights into the biggest news in business and tech from Ukraine, keeping readers informed about important developments in the region. To receive these updates directly in their inbox, subscribers can sign up for the newsletter.

The DDoS attacks on Monobank highlight the ongoing threat of cyberattacks in Ukraine, with Russian hackers being a major source of these attacks. Such incidents can have significant repercussions for businesses and organizations, causing disruptions to essential services and potentially compromising sensitive data. The attacks against Monobank underscore the importance of strong cybersecurity measures and vigilance in protecting against malicious cyber threats.

The impact of the border protests on trade and travel between Ukraine and Poland underscores the interconnectedness of economies in the region and the importance of stable relations between neighboring countries. Resolving such disputes promptly is crucial for maintaining smooth operations and fostering positive economic ties. The conclusion of the protests at the border crossing represents a step towards restoring normalcy and ensuring continued cooperation between Ukraine and Poland.

In light of these events, businesses in Ukraine and beyond should remain vigilant against potential cyber threats and disruptions to trade, particularly in times of political instability or conflict. Implementing robust cybersecurity measures and staying informed about current developments can help mitigate risks and protect against potential attacks. By staying proactive and prepared, organizations can better safeguard their operations and data in an increasingly volatile global landscape. The incidents at Monobank and the border crossing serve as important reminders of the need for resilience and adaptability in the face of evolving challenges.
