Ukrainian and Western leaders praise US aid package as Kremlin issues warning of ‘further ruin’

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a $61 billion military aid package that includes $13.8 billion for Ukraine to buy weapons. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the decision, stating that it would send a powerful signal to the Kremlin. The aid is expected to help slow Russia’s advances in the ongoing war, but more support will likely be needed for Ukraine to regain the offensive. The aid package will now go to the U.S. Senate for approval, with President Joe Biden promising to sign it immediately.

The aid package is crucial for Ukraine, as delays in receiving weapons have put Ukrainian forces at a disadvantage. Ammunition shortages have forced military commanders to ration shells, allowing Russia to make gains along the front line. Ukrainian soldiers have expressed the need for more weapons and gear to continue fighting against the Russian forces. The aid package approval has brought a sense of relief to many in Kyiv, who see it as a beacon of hope after a tough period marked by Russian aggression and attacks on vital infrastructure.

Western leaders have also praised the aid package, recognizing Ukraine’s struggle against Russian forces. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg highlighted Ukraine’s use of weapons provided by NATO allies to weaken Russian combat capabilities. European leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, noted the significance of the aid package in supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression. However, Russian officials expressed criticism, warning that the aid would result in further deaths and prolong the conflict.

Experts emphasize the importance of prompt delivery of aid to Ukraine to prevent additional setbacks to Ukrainian forces. Olexiy Haran, a professor of comparative politics, noted that while the aid is welcome, it may not be sufficient given the prolonged conflict. Matthew Savill, military sciences director at a think tank, highlighted the need for continued funding to stabilize Ukraine’s defense and plan for future operations. On the ground, Russian troops have made advancements in the Donetsk region, leading to casualties on both sides.

In a separate incident, two Ukrainian soldiers were detained after killing a police officer at a checkpoint in Vinnytsia region. The soldiers opened fire on the officer during a routine inspection, resulting in one fatality and injuries to others. The incident adds to the challenges faced by Ukrainian forces on multiple fronts, highlighting the complexities of the conflict. As Ukraine continues to defend its territory against Russian aggression, the timely delivery of aid and ongoing support from Western allies will be crucial in determining the outcome of the war.
