Many Ukrainians were thrilled in the early hours of Sunday morning as Oleksandr Usyk, a Ukrainian boxer, became the world’s undisputed heavyweight champion by defeating Tyson Fury. This victory brought some rare good news to a nation struggling to contain Russian advances, particularly in the northeast where a new front has been opened by Moscow. President Volodymyr Zelensky celebrated the victory as a symbol of Ukraine’s resilience, stating that all opponents will eventually be overcome. Ukrainian troops are currently engaged in fierce fighting to halt Russia’s advance, with fears that key positions may soon fall.

In the midst of grim prospects on the battlefield, many Ukrainians watched the match hoping that Usyk’s win would lift their spirits. This victory was seen as a morale booster in a country facing challenging times. Various public figures and celebrities, including former President Petro O. Poroshenko and former heavyweight world champion Vitali Klitschko, joined in the celebrations, portraying the victory as evidence of Ukraine’s ability to defeat strong opponents. Another Ukrainian boxer, Denys Berinchyk, also won a lightweight world title on the same day, adding to the festive mood.

Since the Russian invasion began in February 2022, Usyk has used his boxing appearances to draw attention to Ukraine’s fight on the battlefield. He has been an active fundraiser for the Ukrainian army through his charity, the Usyk Foundation, raising $740,000 so far. Although Usyk has faced criticism in the past for his ties to Russia, his victory on Sunday marked a significant achievement as the first undisputed heavyweight champion in nearly a quarter-century. The parallels between his grueling fight against Fury and Ukraine’s war against Russia were not lost on Ukrainians.

Many Ukrainians expressed hope that Usyk’s victory would demonstrate to the world that Ukraine was still capable of winning despite the ongoing challenges. The symbolic importance of his win was highlighted by Fedir Ilarionov, a resident of Kyiv, who emphasized the pride he felt in Usyk’s accomplishment. While the victory was seen as positive news for Ukraine, Lieutenant Pavlo Velychko, who defends Ukraine’s northeastern border, reminded that the most crucial victories happen daily on the battlefield and that’s where the focus should be directed.

Overall, Usyk’s victory brought a sense of pride and unity to Ukraine during a challenging time. The boxer’s dedication to his country’s cause, both through his performances in the ring and his fundraising efforts for the Ukrainian army, has resonated with many Ukrainians. Despite facing criticism for his ties to Russia, Usyk’s victory was a significant achievement that served as a reminder of Ukraine’s resilience and ability to overcome obstacles. As the nation continues to fight against Russian advances, the celebration of Usyk’s victory provided a moment of hope and inspiration for many Ukrainians.
