Ukraine Strikes Russian Bridges in Response to Moscow’s Kursk Counteroffensive

Ukrainian forces have begun targeting key Russian transportation routes in the Kursk region to block Moscow from resupplying troops and create a buffer zone. Reports have surfaced of Ukrainian strikes on bridges near Karyzh village in the Seim River, potentially hampering Russian ability to transport heavy machinery. The goal of these strikes is to divide Russia’s war efforts and force Moscow to draw troops away from the front lines in Ukraine. Despite President Vladimir Putin’s determination to stop the incursion, Ukrainian troops are still making advances in the region, prompting the Institute for the Study of War to assess potential future Russian counteroffensive efforts.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has not disclosed the overall goal of the Kursk operation, but some theorize it is aimed at weakening Russia’s forces. Reports suggest Ukrainian forces are making gains in the region despite Russian redeployments to contain the incursion. The Wall Street Journal reported that some 5,000 Russian troops were called in from Ukraine’s Donetsk region to Kursk between August 6-13. Ukrainian troops are pushing into the region, and Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of destroying Russian war potential and creating a buffer zone on enemy territory in the Kursk region. It is believed that Moscow would need around 20,000 soldiers to recapture its territory from the estimated 6,000 Ukrainian troops currently present.

There are concerns about potential Russian advances in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, particularly around Pokrovsk, as Russian forces continue to push west. Intense battles are anticipated in the city within the next two weeks, prompting preparations for a mandatory evacuation of nearly 5,000 children. Images have surfaced showing explosions along Russia’s Trans-Siberian railway line, a crucial route for supplying arms to Moscow’s war effort in Ukraine. Ukrainian forces have been conducting sabotage efforts on Russian targets, including striking an oil depot in Rostov Oblast, neighboring Donetsk, in an effort to disrupt Russia’s cross-border war effort.

Some have speculated that Zelenskyy may be using the incursion into Russia as a bargaining chip to end Moscow’s deadly war, with a Putin aide stating that Moscow is not willing to engage in peace talks “at this stage” following the incursion. Ukrainian forces have been targeting key Russian transportation routes in the Kursk region, resulting in damage to multiple bridges and hampering Russia’s ability to transport heavy machinery. The goal of these strikes is to divide Russia’s war efforts and force Moscow to draw troops away from Ukraine’s front lines. Despite setbacks, Ukrainian forces are continuing to make advances in the region, prompting concerns about potential future Russian counteroffensive efforts.
