German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has pledged further support to Ukraine during his visit to the country, announcing a new weapons package worth half a billion euros. The package includes missiles, drones, tanks, and ammunition. Pistorius stated that he wanted to “precautionarily set the course, as this war will continue for a longer period.”
This latest aid package comes as Russia intensifies its air attacks on Ukraine, causing significant casualties and damage to the country’s infrastructure. The weapons package includes a high number of medium-range air defense missiles, shorter-range missiles, drones for reconnaissance and combat in the Black Sea, as well as spare parts for artillery systems and replacement engines for Leopard tanks. Additionally, one million rounds of ammunition for small arms will be provided, with plans for the delivery of 18 new state-of-the-art self-propelled howitzers in 2025.
Germany will also finance industrial training courses for Ukrainian technicians and provide funds for secure satellite communication in the package. The country will deliver more Leopard A1 and Leopard II A4 tanks from Spain, with equipment for electronic warfare capabilities. Pistorius emphasized the importance of sustainability in the aid efforts, highlighting the commitment to long-term support in the face of an extended conflict.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Umjerow stressed the necessity of ongoing weapons deliveries to achieve strategic objectives and push the enemy beyond international borders. He assured that Ukraine would adhere to any conditions regarding the use of the weapons, as a civilized country that has always honored agreements. While some EU countries have allowed the use of Western weapons on Russian territory, Pistorius avoided directly addressing the issue, citing the importance of strategic ambiguity in such matters.
The decision to provide further military support to Ukraine has been met with gratitude from Ukrainian officials, who are facing ongoing aggression from Russia.
