UK Goes on ‘War Footing’ to Support Defense Industry, Provides Ukraine with $620 Million in Military Aid

The United Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, announced on Tuesday that the country will be increasing its defense spending to 2.5% of GDP by the end of the decade. This decision comes in response to the escalating tensions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Sunak described this as the “biggest strengthening of our national defense for a generation” and pledged to send arms worth 500 million pounds ($620 million) to Ukraine. The increase in defense spending is part of a larger effort to defend the country, its interests, and its values as adversaries continue to align.

The commitment to increase defense spending to 2.5% of GDP is a re-commitment to a target set by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson in 2022. Sunak promised an additional 75 billion pounds ($93 billion) in defense spending over the next six years. The move to put the U.K.’s defense industry on a war footing is driven by the need to have deeper stockpiles of munitions and for industry to be able to replenish them more quickly. NATO leaders had previously agreed to commit 2% of GDP to defense spending, but the invasion of Ukraine by Russia has given new urgency to these efforts.

According to U.K. official figures, defense spending last year was around 55.5 billion pounds, amounting to about 2.07% of the U.K.’s GDP. While the U.K. has spent above the 2% GDP target in the past decade, it has never exceeded 2.35% in 2020, according to NATO data. Sunak emphasized the need for the U.K. to re-arm and increase its defense capabilities in response to the changing global security landscape. The U.K. plans to deploy its Typhoon fighter jets to Poland to help police its skies, as Poland has seen several incursions of its airspace since the invasion of Ukraine.

The U.K.’s commitment to sending arms worth 500 million pounds to Ukraine includes 400 vehicles, 60 boats, 1,600 munitions, and 4 million rounds of ammunition. The assistance comes at a crucial time when Ukraine is struggling to hold off advancing Russian forces on the eastern front line. The shipment will also include British Storm Shadow long-range missiles, which have proven effective at hitting Russian targets. This support follows Ukraine’s plea for greater international assistance to prevent further advances by Russian forces.

The announcement of increased defense spending and arms assistance to Ukraine from the U.K. comes in the context of heightened tensions in the region. The U.S. House of Representatives recently approved $61 billion in new aid for Ukraine, indicating a collective effort by Western allies to support Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression. The commitment from the U.K. reflects solidarity with Ukraine and a recognition of the importance of standing together against Russia’s expansionist ambitions. The lack of ammunition in Ukraine has put the country at a disadvantage, which Russia has capitalized on to make territorial gains in recent months.

The U.K.’s decision to increase defense spending and provide significant arms assistance to Ukraine underscores the gravity of the situation in Eastern Europe. The commitment to re-arm and bolster the defense industry reflects a strategic response to the changing security dynamics in the region. By aligning with NATO allies and supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian forces, the U.K. is signaling its commitment to upholding stability, security, and international norms in the face of increasing threats. Evidently, the events unfolding in Ukraine have prompted a reevaluation of defense priorities and a renewed focus on strengthening national and collective defense capabilities.
