UK airports granted extension to implement new security scanners for liquids and laptops packed in luggage

U.K. airports, including Heathrow and Gatwick, are set to receive extensions to install new scanning technology that will allow passengers to carry more liquid in their hand luggage. The new scanners, which use computed tomography, will also eliminate the need to remove laptops and tablets from bags. These changes aim to improve security measures while reducing delays at airport security checks. The deadline for the installation of the new technology was originally set for December 2022 but was delayed due to pandemic-related disruptions.

The Department for Transport announced that extensions will be granted on a case by case basis as airports face challenges in installing the scanners ahead of the busy summer holiday period. Supply chain delays and construction difficulties have contributed to the delayed implementation of the new technology. Financial penalties may be imposed for further non-compliance as the government works to ensure that airports meet the new requirements in a timely manner.

London City Airport and Teeside Airport have already successfully implemented the new scanners, while larger airports such as Heathrow and Gatwick are expected to complete the installation process in the coming months. Manchester Airports Group plans to have the scanners fully rolled out by 2025. The Airport Operators Association has highlighted the importance of these investments in maintaining the U.K.’s position as a leader in aviation security.

Passengers departing from U.K. airports should be prepared for potential delays and changes in security procedures as the new technology is gradually introduced. Different rules may apply at each airport, requiring clear communication to ensure smooth travel experiences. Consumer groups emphasize the need for quick implementation of the new measures to minimize disruptions for passengers. The goal is to enhance safety and efficiency in air travel while addressing security concerns that have impacted airport operations for years.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper lauded the new scanners as a step forward in enhancing safety for air travelers. By strengthening security measures and streamlining the screening process, the U.K. aims to improve the travel experience for passengers while maintaining high levels of security. The introduction of advanced technology reflects a commitment to staying ahead in aviation security and ensuring that airports remain at the forefront of global safety standards. As airports work to meet the new requirements, passengers are advised to stay informed and follow guidelines to facilitate a smooth travel experience.
