In December 2006, Tammy Myers disappeared just days before Christmas. The 29-year-old mother of three was living with a new man, William Greer, in Houston. Greer also vanished shortly after Myers’ disappearance, leading investigators to believe he was responsible for her death. Deputy Marshal Cameron Welch of the U.S. Marshals Service took on the case in 2010 and was determined to bring Greer to justice. Myers’ daughter, Nicki Myers Bates, was only 7 years old when her mother disappeared and has been on a mission to keep her mother’s case alive ever since.
Bates recalls seeing her mother in pain and suffering abuse at the hands of Greer, although Tammy never reported the abuse to the police. Tammy had planned to leave Greer and reunite with her husband before she disappeared. Bates remembers her mother as a loving and caring person, and her determination to find Greer and bring justice for her mother has driven her for years. The search for Greer, nicknamed “Operation Catch a Toe” due to his missing toe, involved Deputy Marshal Leslie Ramin and others who praised Bates’ commitment.
In 2017, Mexican police captured a man believed to be Greer after a decade on the run. The man denied his identity until his missing toe was discovered, confirming his identity. Greer was later convicted of second-degree manslaughter after a plea deal. Despite the capture, Bates remains determined to find her mother, believed to be buried in a wooded area in Texas. In 2024, Bates joined volunteers from a search organization to continue searching for her mother. Despite challenges in the search, Bates remains hopeful for closure for herself and her children.
Bates’ children are aware of the ongoing search for their grandmother and share her desire for closure and justice. Bates remains resolute in her determination not to give up the search until her mother is found. With the support of volunteers and search organizations, Bates continues to search for Tammy Myers, keeping the memory of her mother alive and striving for closure for her family.
