Trump’s ambiguous stance on political violence in 2024: ‘If we don’t win, you know, it depends’

Former President Donald Trump stated in a recent interview with Time magazine that he does not believe there will be political violence surrounding the 2024 election, as he is confident of winning, but it ultimately depends on the fairness of the election. He considered pardoning every person charged or convicted for rioting at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Trump also discussed leaving abortion policy up to the states, his approach to Russia in NATO, plans for military crackdown on illegal immigration, and reluctance to hire those who believe Biden won the 2020 election.

When asked about the potential for political violence in 2024, Trump expressed confidence in a victory and minimized the likelihood of violence. However, he acknowledged that the outcome depends on the fairness of the election. He also expressed a willingness to consider pardoning those charged in connection with the Capitol riot. In addition, Trump discussed his stance on abortion policy being determined by states and his reluctance to hire individuals who acknowledge Biden’s victory in 2020.

Regarding abortion policy, Trump emphasized that the decision should be left to states, avoiding a direct answer on potential monitoring of women’s pregnancies for compliance with bans. He deferred questions on abortion medication availability and potential penalties for doctors performing abortions outside state laws. Trump also spoke about using the military to address illegal immigration and hinted at the use of the National Guard and other military resources. He suggested the possibility of migrant detention camps, although he hoped they would not be necessary.

On international affairs, Trump reiterated his stance on NATO countries not paying their fair share and suggested that Russia could act as they please towards countries that do not meet their military expenses. He also expressed skepticism towards providing aid to Ukraine unless European nations contribute equally. Trump admitted that achieving a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine is challenging and criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the recent attacks by Hamas on Israel. Overall, Trump’s interview covered a range of topics, from political violence and abortion policy to international relations and immigration issues.
