Trump will not take part in ’60 Minutes’ election special interview

The news article discusses how Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has declined to participate in an interview with “60 Minutes” for its election special. As a result, Democratic opponent Kamala Harris will appear alone in the program. “60 Minutes” regularly invites the two presidential contenders for separate interviews that air back-to-back near the election. This year, the special is scheduled for Monday instead of its usual Sunday time slot. Trump’s campaign initially agreed to the interview before informing CBS that he would not appear. The network’s invitation for an interview still stands, and correspondent Scott Pelley will explain Trump’s absence to viewers.

Vice President Harris will be interviewed by Bill Whitaker in a pre-taped segment for the election special. Currently, there are no other scheduled opportunities for voters to compare the two candidates together. Harris and Trump previously debated on September 10. While Harris has accepted an invitation from CNN for a second debate later this month, Trump has not accepted. The interview special is taking place on Monday instead of the usual “60 Minutes” time slot because CBS is airing the American Music Awards on Sunday.

According to Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung, “60 Minutes” insisted on live fact-checking during the interview, which he described as unprecedented. CBS did not immediately comment on Cheung’s claim. Trump’s past interview with “60 Minutes” correspondent Lesley Stahl prior to the 2020 election was contentious, with the former president ending the session early. His campaign also posted an unedited transcript of the interview. Additionally, CBS News hosted Tuesday’s vice presidential debate between Republican Ohio Sen. JD Vance and Tim Walz, Minnesota’s Democratic governor.

The decision by Donald Trump to decline an interview with “60 Minutes” comes amid a heated presidential election campaign with less than a month left before Election Day. The absence of Trump from the interview special is notable as it deprives viewers of the opportunity to hear directly from both presidential candidates in a joint setting. It also raises questions about Trump’s strategy and willingness to engage with the media leading up to the election. The move could impact voter perceptions and influence undecided voters who may have been looking forward to the “60 Minutes” special for insights into the candidates.

CBS News’s commitment to hosting the election special despite Trump’s absence demonstrates the network’s dedication to providing viewers with informative content during a crucial time in American politics. The decision to continue with the special featuring Vice President Harris alone underscores the importance of journalistic integrity and transparency in covering the presidential election. By offering viewers a platform to hear directly from Harris, CBS News aims to fulfill its role in informing the public and fostering democratic discourse. The absence of Trump from the special may prompt further scrutiny and discussion about the presidential candidates’ approach to media engagement and transparency.

The upcoming “60 Minutes” election special featuring Vice President Harris will be closely watched by viewers, political analysts, and voters as they seek insights into the candidates’ platforms, policies, and leadership styles. With the presidential election drawing near, the interview special holds significance as a key moment for voters to evaluate and compare the presidential candidates. The decision by Trump to decline participation in the special raises questions about his campaign’s strategy and objectives in the final stretch of the election. As the election date approaches, the media’s role in providing comprehensive coverage and analysis of the candidates becomes increasingly crucial in shaping public opinion and ensuring an informed electorate.
