Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump announced that he will be meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the coming week. Trump praised Modi as “fantastic” but also criticized India as a “very big abuser” in terms of trade policies with the U.S. The Indian Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the meeting details. Trump had visited India in 2020, aiming to strengthen trade ties between the two countries, and the U.S. is currently India’s second-largest trading partner after China.

Modi is scheduled to visit the U.S. from September 21 to 23, where he will participate in the fourth Quad Leaders’ Summit in Delaware, hosted by President Joe Biden. Modi will also address the United Nations General Assembly in New York. This visit will be Modi’s first to the U.S. since winning a historic third term in June. During Modi’s previous visit to Washington in 2023, the U.S. and India signed numerous technology and defense deals, marking a stronger era of bilateral relations.

Cooperation between the U.S. and India has continued to deepen, with recent partnerships in the technology sector. The U.S. Department of State announced a collaboration with the India Semiconductor Mission and India’s electronics and IT government body to enhance the global semiconductor value chain. This collaboration aims to expand India’s semiconductor industry for the mutual benefit of both nations. The United States and India are recognized as key partners in ensuring the global semiconductor supply chain aligns with the ongoing digital transformation.

Trump’s positive remarks about meeting with Modi come amidst criticisms of India’s trade practices. However, the upcoming meeting presents an opportunity for further discussions on trade issues and enhancing bilateral relations. Modi’s visit to the U.S. will include participation in significant global summits and engagements, highlighting the importance of the strategic partnership between the two countries. The meeting between Trump and Modi could potentially lead to advancements in various sectors, including technology and defense, fostering stronger ties between the U.S. and India.
