Trump narrowly avoided a threat. Let’s hope the world does the same – and he doesn’t win.

If Donald Trump wins the 2024 election, historians may view it as a turning point in the 21st century. Trump is not a conservative but a radical, with even respected figures like former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley and former chief of staff John Kelly labelling him as a fascist. The fact that no previous candidate from the Republican party has endorsed Trump, with even figures like Dick Cheney supporting Kamala Harris, is sending alarm bells ringing among conservatives. Trump’s appeal lies in his disruptor image, resonating with those who feel alienated by economic and social change and even with tech billionaires like Elon Musk.

Trump’s demagoguery is a cause for concern, as history has shown that demagogues often follow through on their promises. He has already indicated that on day one, he would abandon Ukraine, a move that would validate the most serious violation of international law since World War II. By stopping US military support, Trump would force Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky into a negotiation where Russia holds all the cards, effectively rewarding the aggressor. This would send a clear message to other dictators that America will not defend its allies, potentially emboldening leaders like Putin and Xi Jinping to pursue their territorial objectives.

The warnings from figures like Milley and Kelly about Trump cannot be dismissed as campaign rhetoric, as they come from non-political individuals with a background in service. Trump’s narrative as a victim of the deep state resonates with many Americans who are suspicious of the government. Despite being a known liar, there is a concern that Trump may actually follow through on his promises, such as ending the war in Ukraine in his first 24 hours in office. This would have far-reaching consequences and could embolden other aggressors to pursue their own territorial ambitions.

The impact of a second Trump presidency is already clear, with his disregard for allies and willingness to reward aggressors posing a serious threat to international stability. Trump’s demagogic tendencies and ability to appeal to a base that feels alienated by the establishment have helped him maintain support despite widespread criticism from conservatives. The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated, as the potential consequences of a Trump administration could have lasting effects on global security. As the election approaches, the choice between Trump and his opponents becomes increasingly critical for the future of the country and the world.
