Donald Trump’s recent comments about Kamala Harris’ race have sparked controversy, as he falsely accused her of deciding to “turn Black” only recently for political gain. Harris responded by saying that Trump’s comments were divisive and disrespectful, emphasizing that she is both Indian American and Black. The NABJ leadership clashed with the Trump campaign during a panel where Trump made these remarks, as there was conflict about fact-checking his statements in real-time.

In Paris, U.S. swimmer Katie Ledecky continued her dominance by setting an Olympic record in the women’s 1,500-meter freestyle, earning her eighth career gold medal and 12th overall medal. Ledecky has never lost in the 1,500 and has set the world record six times. France’s Léon Marchand made history by winning double gold in the 200-meter butterfly and the 200-meter breaststroke. The U.S. women’s soccer team also secured a victory against Australia in the group stage.

Tensions in the Middle East escalated after the killing of Hamas’ political chief, Ismail Haniyeh, prompting vows of vengeance from Iran and Hamas. Israel confirmed the death of Hamas military leader, Mohammed Deif, further raising fears of an all-out war. The situation complicates efforts to free hostages captured in previous attacks. Accused 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and two accomplices agreed to plead guilty in the military commissions process, potentially sparing them from the death penalty.

New research shows that Gen X and millennials face higher risks of being diagnosed with 17 types of cancer, including colorectal, kidney, and liver cancers. While mortality rates in younger individuals remain relatively low and these diagnoses are rare, experts are concerned about the rise in cancer cases among younger generations. In politics, the Senate will vote on a bill to expand the child tax credit and provide tax breaks for businesses, while a new bill aims to ensure presidents do not have criminal immunity.

Two NASA astronauts are still aboard the International Space Station more than 50 days after what was supposed to be a week-long mission. Issues with their spacecraft, including helium leaks and malfunctioning thrusters, have delayed their return. Engineers are working to troubleshoot the problems, but a return date has not been set. The astronauts’ extended stay in space highlights the challenges and uncertainties of space travel.
