Troubled radio host Marty Sheargold shows signs of turning over a new leaf following AFL grand final controversy

Marty Sheargold, a 53-year-old radio host, recently appeared on the popular sports panel show The Front Bar but chose not to partake in the customary practice of enjoying a beer with his co-hosts. This decision, coupled with a three-month mental health break he took from his radio show last year, suggests that Sheargold may have changed his ways. The controversy began after an alleged incident at the AFL Grand Final where he was reportedly ejected from the stadium at halftime due to offensive comments he made to other guests. This led to Sheargold taking an extended break from Triple M, returning to screens later to fill in as a host on The Front Bar.

During his appearance on The Front Bar, Sheargold abstained from drinking a beer, a long-held tradition amongst the hosts of the show. While his co-hosts Mick Molloy and Andrew Maher enjoyed beers, Sheargold chose not to have one in front of him. This departure from the norm may indicate a shift in his behavior and lifestyle following the challenging months he has experienced. Despite reports of his involvement in the incident at the AFL Grand Final, a spokesperson for Southern Cross Austereo stated that Sheargold left the event at halftime of his own accord. He later took a personal leave from his radio show, citing burnout as the reason for his extended break.

Upon his return to the airwaves, Sheargold expressed a desire to prioritize self-care and spend more quality time with his family. He drew inspiration from AFL coaches Alistair Clarkson and Damien Hardwick, who took breaks from their respective teams, realizing that he too needed a break. Sheargold ultimately decided to step down from his Triple M Melbourne Breakfast Show in order to focus on maintaining a better work-life balance. Triple M confirmed that he would continue his podcast and national 3pm slot with the network, allowing him to still engage with his audience while taking care of his well-being.

In July, Triple M announced that Sheargold would not be returning to the Breakfast Show but would continue with his podcast and national radio slot. He expressed gratitude towards his team, the network, and his listeners for their support and understanding as he made this decision. Sheargold emphasized the importance of self-care and maintaining a healthy work-life balance, acknowledging the significance of spending time with his family. By prioritizing his well-being and making changes to his professional commitments, Sheargold aims to continue his career in a way that aligns with his values and supports his mental health. As he navigates through a period of transition, Sheargold remains appreciative of the support he has received from those around him.
