However, Gallagher’s participation in the event sparked outrage on social media, with critics accusing the school of promoting misogyny and cheating by allowing a transgender athlete to compete against girls.
The Independent Council on Women’s Sports (ICONS) criticized the school’s decision to allow a transgender athlete to compete in girls’ sports, calling it blatant misogyny. Tom Fitton of Judicial Watch accused the government of abusing girls by allowing transgender athletes to compete against them. Once a transgender student has notified their school of their gender identity, they are to be consistently treated as that gender for athletics eligibility purposes, with restrictions in place to prevent participation on a team of the other gender during the same season.
