Trader Joe’s recalls herbs sold in 29 states due to Salmonella outbreak

Trader Joe’s has recalled packaged herbs due to a salmonella outbreak, affecting its Infinite Herbs organic basil product sold in clamshell containers from Feb. 1 to April 6 in 29 states and Washington, D.C. The outbreak has resulted in 12 cases of salmonella in seven states, with one person being hospitalized. The FDA traced the contaminated basil back to Florida-based Infinite Herbs, LLC, and the company has voluntarily recalled the product.

Infinite Herbs’ CEO, Grego Berliavsky, expressed regret over the situation and urged customers to check their freezers for the recalled basil. The basil was sourced from a single farm that is no longer in operation, and an internal investigation is being conducted to identify the cause of the contamination and prevent future incidents. Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, with children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems being at a higher risk of serious infection.

Salmonella causes millions of infections, hospitalizations, and deaths in the United States annually, with the majority of cases going unreported. Contaminated food, water, and contact with infected animals can lead to salmonella infections. In severe cases, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and cause life-threatening conditions. Trader Joe’s advised customers to discard or return the contaminated basil for a refund. The outbreak affected several states, including Florida, Georgia, Missouri, and New Jersey.

This recall is the second within a month for Trader Joe’s, following an incident with potentially contaminated cashews in March. Additionally, the grocer recalled steamed chicken soup dumplings due to the presence of hard plastic particles. Recalls like these highlight the importance of food safety practices and the need to prevent contamination to protect consumers from illness. It is essential for companies to be transparent, take quick action, and implement measures to ensure the safety of their products.

Consumers are reminded to be cautious when handling and consuming food products, paying attention to recalls and following proper storage and preparation guidelines. Salmonella infections can have serious consequences, and it is crucial to seek medical attention if experiencing severe symptoms. By staying informed and practicing food safety measures, individuals can reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses and protect their health. Trader Joe’s and other retailers must prioritize the safety of their products to maintain the trust and confidence of their customers.
