Sydney is gearing up for a spectacular New Year’s Eve celebration, with a 12-minute firework display set to blast across the city. The display will feature 53,500 fireworks set off from various locations, including the Opera House, city skyscrapers, drones, and the Harbour Bridge. There are ample viewing spots along Sydney Harbour, although popular locations have sold out. Vantage points will open at 9am, with some allowing BYO alcohol, while others prohibit drinking.
Public transport will be available for 46 hours straight to accommodate the celebrations, with additional train, bus, and light rail services in operation. Major roads will be closed, with some services to Circular Quay ending early in the afternoon. The Sydney Harbour Bridge will be closed from 11pm on New Year’s Eve to 1.30am on New Year’s Day, while the Sydney Harbour Tunnel and Anzac Bridge will remain open. Weather on New Year’s Eve is expected to be clear with temperatures reaching a maximum of 28 degrees and dropping to 22 degrees at midnight.
For those celebrating from home, the ABC will provide live coverage starting at 8.30pm, with hosts taking viewers through to after midnight. A New Year’s Eve concert featuring Bernard Fanning, Paul Dempsey’s supergroup, and Casey Donovan will also be broadcast. Alternatively, harbourside restaurants, bars, and pubs will be open for those looking for a more laid-back celebration. Many establishments will be hosting ticketed events, so reservations are recommended.
