Syrsky took over as commander-in-chief in February, following the dismissal of his predecessor Valery Zaluzhny. He highlighted Russia’s construction of heavy defense lines in the south of Ukraine, which proved difficult for Ukraine to break through during a counteroffensive. The loss of the frontline city Avdiivka to Russian forces in February was attributed to the compromised defense integrity and lack of ammunition for artillery, hindering effective counter-battery operations. To prevent encirclement and minimize casualties, Syrsky made the decision to withdraw from Avdiivka, acknowledging the challenges faced by Ukrainian forces in maintaining their positions.
