Top Democrats criticize Israel following Biden call with Netanyahu

In recent days, numerous Democrats, including top party leaders, have been urging President Biden to reconsider the U.S.’s support of Israel following an airstrike that killed World Central Kitchen staffers. Calls have been made to halt weapons shipments to Israel until a full investigation into this incident is completed. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer even called for new elections in Israel to remove Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been criticized for Israel’s actions in Gaza. Biden himself warned Netanyahu that U.S. policy on Gaza could change if civilians are not adequately protected.

Many Democrats, including Senators Peter Welch and Chris Coons, have expressed concerns about Israel’s actions in Gaza and have suggested that conditions be placed on arms shipments if civilians are not better protected. The families of American hostages in Gaza have also criticized Biden for not doing enough to bring their loved ones home. However, most Democrats have been primarily focused on the humanitarian situation facing Gaza and have called for Israel to improve its treatment of innocent civilians and aid workers in the region.

Despite the growing criticism from members of his own party, Biden pushed back against suggestions that he is abandoning Israel or halting military aid during a press briefing. He denied threatening to stop military aid during his call with Netanyahu and expressed apparent shock at the suggestion that he was abandoning Israel. Senator John Fetterman, on the other hand, has been a notable exception to the trend, expressing unwavering support for Israel in its conflict with Hamas.

The White House has not yet responded to these concerns raised by members of the Democratic Party. However, the administration has emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire and protection of innocent civilians in Gaza. Concerns are mounting among many Democrats about the ongoing conflict in the region and the humanitarian impact it is having on civilians. The situation remains tense as calls for a change in U.S. policy towards Israel continue to grow within the Democratic Party.

Overall, the recent White House call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sparked a wave of criticism and calls for a reassessment of the U.S.’s support of Israel among many Democrats. Issues such as the treatment of civilians in Gaza, humanitarian aid, and the protection of innocent workers have become central concerns for members of the party. While Biden has reaffirmed his support for Israel, the pressure to make changes in policy towards Israel is mounting within the Democratic Party. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing tensions in the region and a growing chorus of voices advocating for a shift in U.S. policy towards Israel.
