Toner: What is it and What does it do? Your FAQs Answered

Face toner has evolved from its traditional purpose of balancing the pH of the skin, which was necessary due to harsh alkaline cleansers of the past. Today, toners address various skin concerns like oil control, acne, and dryness. They can remove residual oil and product residue to prep the skin for the following steps in a skincare routine. Different toners can be selected based on specific skin needs, such as acne, inflammation, hydration, or rejuvenation. While toners have similarities with essences, astringents, and micellar water, they serve different purposes and have unique ingredients to cater to specific skin concerns.

Essences, popular within the K-Beauty community, are watery liquids that often contain antioxidants or vitamins to hydrate and boost skin health. Astringents, on the other hand, are used after cleansing to remove oil and water from the skin. However, they can be very drying and potentially irritating to the skin. It is important to choose a toner that suits your skin type and concerns to avoid any adverse effects. Incorporating a toner into your skincare routine can help balance the pH level of the skin, regulate sebum production, and reduce the risk of dryness, flakiness, irritation, inflammation, or sensitivity.

Board-certified dermatologist Corey L. Hartman emphasizes the importance of balancing the pH level of the skin, especially if it feels tight after cleansing, which indicates that natural oils may have been stripped. Using a toner can help with this balance and promote healthier skin. While toners may not be as necessary with the gentle and pH-balanced cleansers available today, they can still provide benefits in terms of skin health and appearance. Finding the right toner for your specific skin concerns can help enhance your skincare routine and improve the overall condition of your skin.

Brooke Jeffy, a dermatologist and founder of BTWN Skincare, explains that toners have evolved over time to address a variety of skin concerns beyond pH balancing. The right toner can hydrate, calm inflammation, address acne, or rejuvenate the skin, depending on its ingredients. It is important to select a toner that suits your skin type and concerns to maximize its effectiveness. While toners may not be necessary for everyone, they can be a valuable addition to a skincare routine, especially for those looking to improve the health and appearance of their skin. Ultimately, the decision to incorporate a toner into your skincare regimen should be based on your individual skin needs and preferences.
