Three Key Observations from Bucs-Dolphins: Baker Mayfield all set to perform; Uncertainty over Miami’s Second Quarterback?

In a victorious effort to establish early continuity, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offensive starters successfully completed a quick 70-yard touchdown drive in just seven plays during the final preseason game against the Miami Dolphins. This pattern reflected last season, in which Tampa Bay went 19 games without a single opening-drive touchdown. Starting quarterback, Baker Mayfield, lauded the team’s efficient movement and communication, stating that the coaches’ expectations were met.

The Buccaneers’ starting defense, which had been mostly off for preseason, achieved a three-and-out against Miami’s second string players on the Dolphins’ first drive of the game. Several Tampa Bay starters were rested, but are anticipated to return healthy for the season’s opening game in 17 days. Coach Todd Bowles was satisfied with his team’s readiness and the continuity they displayed, despite their eagerness to play longer.

The Dolphins, on the other hand, had most of their starters off on Friday night, creating an opportunity to further evaluate the contenders for the backup quarterback position. Former Jets starter Mike White, who started the game, struggled to sustain drives and was hit on his final throw for a fumble. Skylar Thompson, who didn’t play last season, provided a contrast by moving the ball more effectively. He achieved 5-for-5 for 58 yards on his first drive, including a score and ended the night 19-for-27 for 190 yards, yielding him a 99.3 quarterback rating.

Alongside the preseason finale was the race for the final places in the Buccaneers’ initial 53-man roster for the regular season. Several players highlighted their potential for a spot. C.J. Brewer, a defensive lineman who spent much of last season on the practice squad, showcased his skills with a tackle for loss and a defended pass. Kam Johnson, the undrafted rookie from Division II Barton College, made his debut and finished with 25 yards on five touches. Tavierre Thomas, Marcus Banks, and Antonio Grier also showcased their potential to secure a spot on the 53-man roster.

The preseason finale offered insight into several players’ potential to impress and make the roster. Several undrafted rookies showed promise, while veterans proved they still have what it takes to contribute at a high level. While some players are guaranteed a spot on the roster, others face more uncertainty, though they have certainly demonstrated their capabilities during the preseason games.
