Thousands disrupt Land Forces expo

Protesters gathered in Melbourne’s CBD to demonstrate against the Land Forces International Land Defence Expo, with drums banging and chants of “free, free Palestine” filling the air. Police blocked ramps to the M1 freeway and West Gate Freeway, causing significant traffic congestion. Tensions escalated as protesters attacked two men in suits, threw rocks at police, and engaged in a standoff with officers, resulting in the deployment of pepper spray and physical altercations. Some protesters were seen lying on the ground bleeding after being hit by unknown objects, and police used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

As the expo opened to the public, clashes between protesters and police continued, with eggs being thrown at officers and more confrontations occurring. Protesters also targeted men in suits passing by, shouting insults and challenging their presence. The police were granted special powers under the Terrorism Act, allowing them to request identification and search vehicles in designated areas. Despite no specific threats targeting the event, the National Terrorism Threat Level was deemed ‘probable’, prompting heightened security measures.

Various activist groups, including Extinction Rebellion and Students for Palestine, joined forces to form a larger demonstration called Disrupt Land Forces. Blockade co-chair Bella Beiraghi emphasized the opposition to weapons of war and the desire to stand against the death and destruction they bring. Premier Jacinta Allan condemned any violent actions during the protest, emphasizing that police were there to maintain safety and should be treated with respect. Greens MP Gabrielle de Vietri’s decision to leave parliament to attend the protest was criticized as a political move by Allan, who called for better representation for her constituents.

Police Minister Anthony Carbines stated that Victoria Police, with support from interstate officers, was well-equipped to handle unruly protestors. He acknowledged the presence of professional protesters from other states joining the demonstration and emphasized the police’s awareness of these individuals. Shadow Police Minister Brad Battin expressed concern for the safety of Victorian police due to the lack of adequate staffing, particularly in regional areas. Protests began earlier than expected, with incidents such as vandalism of hotels and traffic blockades on the West Gate Freeway occurring in the days leading up to the expo.

The biennial Land Forces International Land Defence Expo, known for showcasing military equipment and technology, attracted hundreds of defense personnel from around the world. More than 800 domestic and international companies participated in the event, displaying a range of weapons and heavy-duty machinery. The presence of military equipment, including tanks delivered discreetly under the cover of darkness, raised concerns among protesters who sought to disrupt and raise awareness about the implications of the defense industry. The clashes between protesters and police highlighted the ongoing tensions surrounding issues such as war, militarization, and activism in Melbourne.
