“This is a vicious cycle”: Daughter of Army veteran slain in front yard demands justice, policy reform

Fernanda Sandoval, the daughter of a U.S. Army veteran who was killed in front of his California home, called for changes to local criminal justice policies following the tragic death of her father, Mario Morales-Moreno. Morales-Moreno was killed in April when someone opened fire at his Long Beach home, striking him and another victim. Sandoval emphasized the need for policy and change, highlighting that dangerous individuals are being released into the public and reoffending due to current policies. She called for action from the judicial system and politicians to address this issue.

Investigators announced the arrests of four suspects in connection with Morales-Moreno’s murder, stating that they don’t believe he was the intended target. The suspects are facing charges for murder and attempted murder, with authorities recovering multiple firearms and deeming the shooting gang-related. Long Beach Chief of Police Wally Hebeish condemned the violence, stating that gang-related acts have no place in the city. The suspects are being held on separate $2 million bail while facing charges for Morales-Moreno’s death and the attempted murder of four others.

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón, who has faced criticism over his criminal justice directives, joined Sandoval as she called for changes in local policies. Residents in Los Angeles County are living in fear, feeling unsafe in their homes due to current policies that are hindering crime victims from seeking justice. Sandoval’s remarks were seen as a criticism towards Gascón, prompting discussions on the impact of his policies on the community. Critics have opposed Gascón’s directives, such as promoting zero-cash bail and ending the prosecution of juveniles as adults, despite facing backlash from law enforcement.

Morales-Moreno, who worked as a senior code enforcement specialist for La Mirada, was praised by the city for his positive attitude, leadership, and mentorship within the community. His tragic death has brought attention to the need for policy changes to prevent such senseless acts of violence. Sandoval’s call for action comes as a plea for justice for her father and other victims of crime in Los Angeles County. The impact of current criminal justice policies on public safety and victims’ rights is at the forefront of discussions following Morales-Moreno’s death and the arrests of the suspects involved in the shooting.

As the community mourns the loss of Morales-Moreno, the focus has shifted towards addressing issues of gang-related violence and the effectiveness of current criminal justice policies. Sandoval’s advocacy for change reflects the frustrations of many residents who no longer feel safe in their homes due to escalating crime rates and repeat offenders. The collaboration between law enforcement, prosecutors, and community members is essential in implementing reforms that prioritize public safety and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions. The tragic loss of Morales-Moreno serves as a reminder of the need for systemic changes to prevent further acts of violence and provide justice for victims and their families.
