Third Republican Representative supports move to remove Johnson, forcing speaker to rely on Democratic support

House Speaker Mike Johnson is facing a potential ouster from his own party, with far-right Republicans coming forward to support a motion to vacate his speakership. Rep. Paul Gosar announced his support for this motion due to concerns about the $95 billion foreign aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, which he believes diverts resources from securing the southern border and addressing the issue of illegal immigration. He emphasized the need for a speaker who prioritizes America’s interests over those of the military-industrial complex.

As Republicans hold a three-vote majority in the House, moderate Democrats like Tom Suozzi and Jared Moskowitz have pledged to defend Johnson against his own party members who are pushing for his removal. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries indicated that discussions about the potential motion to vacate Johnson will only happen after the national security legislation passes. Johnson himself stated that he is focused on doing the right thing in his role as speaker and is not operating out of fear of losing his position.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene brought forth the motion to oust Johnson, citing concerns about his handling of the US border crisis and the conflict in Ukraine. She has threatened to bring the motion to the House floor, and though Johnson has met with her to address her concerns, the situation remains unresolved. Another Republican, Rep. Thomas Massie, has co-sponsored the motion, expressing the need to prevent Johnson from being vacated from his position.

The issue of foreign aid for Ukraine has caused friction within the Republican Party, with divisions over whether to support or oppose the aid package. Hardline Republicans have accused Johnson of not fulfilling promises to secure the US border before allocating funding for foreign aid, leading to negative consequences such as increased crime and human trafficking. Despite these concerns, House Democrats have supported Johnson in passing the foreign aid package, further complicating the situation.

Efforts to remove Johnson from his position are reminiscent of past challenges within the Republican Party, such as the move to oust former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. In that instance, eight House Republicans, including Rep. Matt Gaetz, joined Democrats to remove McCarthy from his role as speaker. The current tension surrounding Johnson’s speakership has sparked debates within the Democratic caucus about intervening to prevent the speaker from being ousted by his own party.

The ongoing disagreements among Republicans over key issues such as foreign aid, border security, and party leadership have created a challenging environment in the House of Representatives. The motion to vacate House Speaker Mike Johnson underscores deep ideological divisions within the GOP and raises questions about the future direction of the party. As Democrats and moderate Republicans rally behind Johnson, the outcome of the brewing conflict remains uncertain and could have significant implications for the functioning of the House.
