Third-party candidates pose an unpredictable challenge in Wisconsin’s Biden-Trump rematch

Democrats in Wisconsin are closely monitoring the potential impact of third-party candidates, specifically Robert Kennedy Jr., on the upcoming general election against former President Donald Trump. The state has a history of close elections, with third-party candidates in previous elections causing concerns among both Democrats and Republicans. Progressive voices are cautioning against third-party candidacies, urging voters not to throw away their votes in a race seen as increasingly divisive.

The threat of third-party challengers is evident in Wisconsin, where Jill Stein’s Green Party candidacy in 2016 had a significant impact on the outcome. This year, Kennedy is positioning himself as an alternative for voters disillusioned with both Biden and Trump. While concerns have been raised about potentially spoiling the election for Trump, Kennedy argues that neither candidate aligns with his policy priorities, such as reducing the national debt and ending military conflicts.

Progressives are divided over Biden’s stance on Israel’s conflict in Gaza, prompting some to consider protest votes for third-party candidates like Kennedy. A recent poll from Marquette University Law School showed that both Biden and Trump could lose support if third-party candidates were included in the race. Kennedy’s supporters in Wisconsin are mobilizing to gather the signatures needed for him to qualify for the ballot, with the belief that dissatisfaction with the two major parties creates an opening for a third-party candidacy.

Republican leaders in Wisconsin believe that Kennedy’s candidacy poses a greater challenge to Biden than to Trump. The GOP base appears to be more energized and loyal to Trump, potentially making it more difficult for Democrats to retain support. Democratic leaders are wary of the impact of third-party candidates, recalling the lessons learned from Hillary Clinton’s loss in 2016 and the role of Stein’s candidacy. The DNC is actively working to address the challenge posed by third-party candidates, recognizing the importance of preventing another Trump administration.

As the election approaches, the uncertainty surrounding the impact of third-party candidates like Kennedy looms large in Wisconsin. Democrats are grappling with the potential consequences of protest votes and the need to ensure voters are aware of Biden’s accomplishments. With the state’s history of close elections, there is a sense of urgency among Democrats to prevent any factors that could swing the outcome in favor of Trump. As canvassing efforts continue in Wisconsin, the presence of third-party candidates like Kennedy remains a significant concern for both parties as they navigate the unpredictable landscape of the upcoming election.
