The Wall Street Journal’s top editor hopes Evan Gershkovich’s year behind bars will be his last

Emma Tucker, speaking as a representative of The Wall Street Journal, expresses hope that Evan Gershkovich will be released from imprisonment in Russia within the next year. Gershkovich, a journalist for the Journal, has been detained in Russia for a year, facing an unpredictable regime and an uncertain timeframe for his release. The newspaper has made efforts to keep Gershkovich’s story alive in the press, including holding awareness events such as a read-a-thon, a global run, and a social media storm with the hashtag #IStandWithEvan.
Tucker emphasizes the importance of keeping Gershkovich in the public eye to maintain pressure on the governments involved in his case. She also underscores the significance of a free press and the chilling effect on journalism that Gershkovich’s detention has had. Despite the situation, Tucker notes that The Journal’s editorial stance on Russia remains unchanged, but the incident has prompted reflection on the dangers journalists face and the need for accurate reporting in challenging environments.
While free press advocates have criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for his crackdown on journalism, some right-wing media figures, like Tucker Carlson, have praised Russia, despite Gershkovich being imprisoned for simply reporting from the country. Tucker acknowledges the disturbing trend of media figures lauding Russia while a journalist is wrongfully detained and emphasizes the importance of accurate reporting from the region. She asserts that The Journal will continue to focus on providing good reporting on Russia despite the rhetoric of others.
As Gershkovich endures his imprisonment, Tucker describes him as resilient but acknowledges the toll a year in a Moscow prison has likely taken on his mental state. She credits him with trying to protect his family from the ordeal they are experiencing and highlights his effort to appear positive for their sake. Gershkovich’s parents have been deeply affected by his imprisonment, and Tucker suggests that his efforts to maintain a positive front are in part to alleviate their distress. Despite the challenging circumstances, Tucker remains hopeful that Gershkovich will be able to reunite with his loved ones soon.
