The US, According to Steve Bannon, is “Not a Democracy”

Steve Bannon, a right-wing media personality and former White House chief strategist under the Trump administration, recently shared an article on social media claiming that the United States is not a democracy. He emphasized that the U.S. is a “Constitutional Republic NOT a Democracy.” Bannon’s statement comes amid ongoing debates about the state of democracy in the country, particularly in the aftermath of the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot incited by supporters of former President Donald Trump.

The Capitol riot led to Trump being charged with four counts by the Department of Justice in relation to the events, including conspiracy to defraud the United States and obstruction of an official proceeding. Trump has maintained his innocence and claimed that the charges against him are politically motivated. Furthermore, he is facing additional indictments on the state and federal level, which he has also denied. The divide between those who support Trump’s views on democracy and those who view him as a threat to the democratic system remains a prominent issue in American politics.

Former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner has criticized Trump, calling him a threat to the U.S. and democracy. Kirschner highlighted Trump’s dangerous rhetoric and actions, including the January 6 attack on the Capitol, which resulted in fatalities. Trump’s inflammatory language and statements about potential violence have sparked concerns about the future of democracy in the country. This comes as Trump prepares for a potential rematch against current President Joe Biden later this year, raising questions about the integrity of the electoral process.

Amidst the ongoing political turmoil, some observers have debated whether the U.S. should be classified as a democracy or a republic. Political scientist Jay Cost argues that the U.S. is a democratic republic, combining elements of both democracy and republicanism. Cost emphasizes the importance of ensuring that government functions for the entire political community, as demonstrated in Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. The debate surrounding the nature of the U.S. government reflects broader discussions about the role of democracy in American society.

Former Representative Adam Kinzinger, a Republican who served on the House select committee investigating the January 6 riot, has warned of the threats to democracy posed by Trump and his supporters. Kinzinger has emphasized the need to protect democratic principles and ensure that the country emerges from its challenges with strengthened institutions. As the country continues to grapple with political divisions and concerns about the future of democracy, the role of civic engagement and accountability remains crucial in shaping the nation’s democratic trajectory.
