The Upcoming Total Solar Eclipse: Your Guide to Viewing It

April 2, 2024No Comments3 Mins Read

The Great American Eclipse is set to occur on April 8, marking the last total solar eclipse over North America until 2044. During a total solar eclipse, the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, blocking the sun and creating darkness for a short period of time. Depending on the angle of viewing, individuals may witness totality, where the sun is completely shrouded by the moon, or a partial eclipse. The upcoming eclipse in 2024 will start on the Mexican Pacific coast and traverse the US from Texas to Maine before continuing into eastern Canada. Planning ahead is crucial for those wanting to witness this rare event by booking accommodations or securing a viewing spot.

For those unable to travel, NASA will be hosting a 3-hour live stream of the eclipse starting at 1 p.m. ET, featuring commentary by NASA experts, astronauts on the international space station, and views from locations across the nation. Viewers can tune in to NASA Plus, NASA TV, or the NASA website to watch the live broadcast. It is important to prioritize eye safety during the eclipse, as looking directly at the sun without proper protection can cause serious eye damage. Solar viewing glasses that comply with safety standards are recommended, and other indirect methods like a pinhole projector can be used as alternatives.

To capture the eclipse through photography, attaching a certified solar filter to a camera is essential for protecting the eyes and ensuring clear images. An app called Solar Snap, designed by a former Hubble Space Telescope astronomer, offers a camera filter that attaches to the back of an iPhone or Android phone along with solar eclipse glasses for eye protection. The app allows users to zoom in on the eclipse, adjust exposure settings, and take better photographs. In comparison to the 2017 total solar eclipse, the upcoming 2024 eclipse will cover more land and last longer, with maximum totality lasting nearly four-and-a-half minutes.

When considering the best places to watch the Great American Eclipse, being within the path of totality offers the best chance of witnessing the event. Most cities along the eclipse’s path currently have hotel availability, and Delta Airlines is offering eclipse-viewing flights for those interested in a unique perspective. For those looking to secure eclipse viewing glasses, Warby Parker eyeglasses stores are providing free ISO-certified glasses until the eclipse date. It is important to plan ahead and prioritize eye safety to ensure a memorable and safe experience during this rare celestial event.
